You made some good points, along with some with which I disagree. This one is the most worrisome, for it displays a lack of understanding of the basic structure of our government:
“… the current chief executive of this nation did not win the popular vote. Many decry the Electoral College.”
We’re not a democracy (popular vote), we’re a Republic — a democratic Republic, & this is wisely built into our Constitution. Were we a Democracy, then those in the large cities would, in effect, rule the country, dictating to the rest of us how things will be.
Our very foundation is a union of 50 states. As a state, New York is neither more nor less important than New Mexico. Without the Electoral College many of those in more rural settings would be dragged along into things more beneficial for the city folks who are unfamiliar with our way of life & our values. It would lead to devastation of various sorts for the less populous states, & thus for the nation, as a whole.
Every coin has 2 sides, so for every negative raised against the President, there are positives. I’m not saying that the more rural way is right, nor is the city way right — they’re just different. We can cross this divide!
Rather than bicker over our different perspectives, it would be great to see Americans reach out to better understand one another’s ways. With sufficient understanding, it all really does make sense, but when we’re so sure our way is the right way — not so much. 😉
