David, this is both a wonderful article & my first intro to you. Glad to have read it, glad for the clear exposure of over-reliance on old assumptions of whatever sort, made in any of the sciences. New ideas & perspectives are almost always soundly rejected — at first — eventually making their way into “what we’ve always known” — upon which new assumptions are then based. 😆
“ At the heart of these laws lies a seemingly simple but absolute assumption, that by knowing the quantifiable information we can predict outcomes with certainty, and, furthermore, that all things are both essentially knowable and quantifiable.”
This strikes to the heart of, IMO, where science went off the tracks, going quite mechanistic in their views. As we judge a tree by its fruits, there are some very questionable fruits arising from this belief. I will be glad to see it take its exit, stage left.
What we do is very much a function of what we are, which is hugely unknown & quite possibly unknowable. This is no problem, when you view our ultimate environment as eternity/infinity. The mechanistic route defines us hugely in terms of body & mind. Were this our totality, there should be some success with said predictions. Clearly, there is not.
As long as we remain open, maintaining a fairly flexible perspective on it all, all is well. It’s when we become closed, taking our systems of belief for “the truth,” that we go “off the tracks,” greatly affecting our potential outcomes going forward.
Thanks for inspiring that 😆
