Beautiful article, Melissa. I really appreciate it.

Perhaps a more stable happiness is to be found via a good relationship — with our self. This is the only relationship that’s guaranteed to last for life, yet most don’t even focus on it. No one taught us the critical importance of truly loving, honoring, & caring for the self in nurturing ways.

This relationship will be quite different for each one of us, so there is no “how-to” or self-help manual that could cover the bases for us. It’s truly a do-it-yourself adventure on which so much rides. How we feel about ourselves, how we treat ourselves on a daily, an hourly, a moment-by-moment basis is the point, here.

Have you watched your thoughts, lately, friends? Until we make this relationship a priority many of our thoughts go from unkind to cruel — to the self. We want to feel nurtured & cared for by that special other, by our family, by our friends — but what about starting at the ground floor with the self?

We can’t give what we don’t have, & if we want love let’s start by sharing that with who we are. Only then are we at all likely to magnetize that love or that happiness we’re looking for everywhere else. It’s time to be “selfish” in the best possible way, it seems to me.

Thanks for the inspiration to write this. 😃
